Hi, happy Monday!
Last month, for the first time in over a decade, I returned to the summer camp where I spent most of my summers for most of my youth and young adulthood. I’ll spare you several self-indulgent paragraphs on the magic of summer camp, but ever since my visit on a sunny June afternoon, I’ve been reflecting on my years spent in the rolling hills of northern Michigan.
One of my very favorite things about camp was that music played a huge role in the day-to-day culture. We sang constantly: every morning and evening at flagpole; every meal in the dining hall; walking back to our cabins; hiking, biking, or canoeing for weeks on end; and, maybe most importantly, sitting around a campfire. Music created a sense of community and a shared language. I loved that we all knew these same songs, that they felt like “ours.” I can trace my love of live music and the communal experience it provides back to evenings spent around a campfire.
So, today’s mix is campfire-core. Some of the songs here are camp staples (“The Circle Game,” “Wagon Wheel,” “The General”) while others just inspire similar feelings. Perfect for actually sitting around a campfire or at least pretending that you are (and that the heat index isn’t in the 100’s)!
