Hi, happy Monday!
Over the weekend, I went to a Cat Power show. She is currently on tour playing her latest live album, Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert. The show and album are faithful recreations of one of Bob Dylan’s most infamous live show.
I am a Bob Dylan fan, though a pretty casual one. I saw him live about ten years ago and, hate to say it, it was one of my more disappointing concertgoing experiences. I guess I get it- he’s decades and decades into his career, he doesn’t want to play just the hits. But you know what people in the crowd want to hear? The hits!
One of the great things about seeing Cat Power recreate a 1966 Dylan set is that you get to hear the hits. “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “Just Like a Woman,” “Like a Rolling Stone!” They’re there! Also there- “Desolation Row,” one of the great Long Songs.
Clocking in at eleven minutes and twenty one seconds, the album version of “Desolation Row” is definitely one of the longest songs I listen to with any regularity. In a world where popular songs are becoming shorter and shorter, there’s something novel about sitting with a longer song. Today’s mix includes some of favorite long songs, all running six minutes or more. I really enjoyed pulling these together, hope you enjoy listening!
Thanks for being here, for reading, and for listening! If you enjoy Made You a Mix, please share with a friend!
