Hey, I made you a mix!
If you knew me between the years 2003 and 2014, I probably burned you a mix cd. It was very much my love language until the format became seemingly obsolete. I was committed to sharing my favorite songs of the moment or commemorating an event with a thematic mix. In that vein and in an effort to have a creative outlet (and some kind of writing accountability), I’m sending you this newsletter, Made You a Mix.
Hope you’ll subscribe, hope you’ll find a new song you like, and hope you’ll share your favorites with me! Thanks for reading and for indulging my love of a mix.
So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings, Squirrel Flower- Sometimes the Spotify algorithm gives you something great like this cover of Caroline Polachek’s, “So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings.” No longer a highly-sleek pop track, this cover gives a fun song a lot of depth. If I didn’t know the Caroline version, I’d fully buy this as an indie pop-rock piece and I think that makes a great cover. Also, I love any song with a good guitar-centric build, so I’m sold.
Anything But Me, MUNA- MUNA put out my favorite song of 2021, “Silk Chiffon,” so I’ve been impatiently waiting more new stuff and “Anything But Me” doesn’t disappoint. Very excited for their upcoming, self-titled album, to be released in June.
Yuck, Charli XCX- Charli XCX hasn’t had a commercial hit in a while and when she has had one, it’s been as a featured artist (ie, “Fancy” with Iggy Azaelea or “I Love It” with Icona Pop). Instead, Charli’s been putting out some of the most interesting pop/hyperpop music for years now. This new album, “CRASH” moves away from that and is experimenting with a more mainstream sound as Charli plays the part of “pop figurehead.” I actually didn’t like the singles from the album, but every other song is great. “Yuck” is an early favorite track.
happy accident, Tomberlin- I got stuck on this song because of the catchy riff, but stayed for the lyrics. “Always measure my time by the way you spend mine”….. OOF.
Nervous, Maren Morris- Maren Morris’s first album, HERO, is one of my desert island albums, so I am always excited for new Maren. This is my favorite single released ahead of her third album, Humble Quest, coming out this week.
