The other day, my mom sent me a link to a playlist accompanied by this message:
For years, my mother was a recipient of mix CDs, titled “Mom’s Songs,” that I made for her birthday and Mother’s Day. I believed then, and I still believe now, that making someone a mix is a fun and thoughtful gift. These mixes must have meant something to my mom if she still has the physical CDs from well over a decade ago. And it means something to me that she took the time to put them all on one streaming playlist.
The playlist is over 140 songs long and spans at least a decade (and a concerning amount of John Mayer’s discography). Not sure all the songs are classics, but this playlist is certainly a time capsule of the mom-friendly music I liked from 2003-2013. Check out the full mix here:
Inspired by my mom’s playlist, I’m bringing back Mom’s Songs for 2022. Featuring 20 songs (just enough to fit on a blank CD) from Jenny Lewis, Japanese Breakfast, Taylor Swift, and more! Check out this year’s mix here:
Whatever special event you’re celebrating next, be it Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or someone’s birthday, I encourage you to make someone a mix of their own. Bring back my favorite art form! And if you have a laptop with a CD drive, dare to burn a physical copy!
Thank you for reading! If you have any old mix CDs I made for you, please let me know what is on it. My iTunes library and playlists are lost to time, but I would love to recreate more mixes. Have a great week!
