The 64th Annual Grammys were last night. I didn’t watch much so I don’t have a lot to say besides the fact that the Grammys feel increasingly irrelevant (case in point, Best Comedy Album went to an admitted abuser).
My favorite album of 2021, Jubilee by Japanese Breakfast, did not win its category, but other good songs, albums, and people won a few awards. I included 5 songs I like that won awards last night in today’s mix. Enjoy!
Let me know what else you’re listening to this morning!
As It Was, Harry Styles- New era! This song is fun- the riff sounds like the Strokes/Spoon/other 2010s indie meets “Take On Me.”
Skinny Love (Spotify Single), Japanese Breakfast- I love Spotify single sessions because they have given us so many good covers (I could do an entire mix of those. Maybe eventually…). Japanese Breakfast covering Bon Iver is the latest in a long line of good ones.
2000 Miles, Gatlin- I’ve been trying to listen to some of the random things Spotify suggests and today I put on Gatlin. This is her latest single and I really dig it.
Broken Horses, Brandi Carlile- Brandi has an incredible voice, but it just gets more and more unreal and I absolutely love it on this song.
Block Your Number, Maude Latour- I’m here for a dense, rambling song and this one just has so many words.
Pay Your Way in Pain, St. Vincent- St. Vincent won Best Alternative Music Album for Daddy’s Home. An appropriate thank you for giving us this incredible 2019 Grammys performance with Dua Lipa.
All Eyes on Me, Bo Burnham- I’m always looking for excuses to talk about Bo Burnham, so shout out Grammys. “All Eyes on Me” won Best Song Written For Visual Media from his Netflix special Inside.
brutal, Olivia Rodrigo- Olivia won Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album (I really thought she’d win Album of the Year, so congrats to Jon Batiste for snagging that). “brutal” is my favorite off of sour.
Kiss Me More, Doja Cat ft. SZA- Congrats to the ear-wormiest song of the last year for rightfully winning Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
Leave the Door Open, Silk Sonic- The Grammys love Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak so while I thought Record and Song of the Year would go to Olivia, I should’ve bet on Silk Sonic.
