This past Tuesday at the VMAs, *NSYNC reunited on stage to present an award. They didn’t perform, but it was their first time together in a decade. My inner 8 year old, with an *NSYNC poster on her bedroom wall and keychain on her backpack, was thrilled.
I have never been a casual fan of anything I care about, and my love for *NSYNC is probably at the root of this. I consumed any and all *NSYNC-related media I could get my hands on including an IMAX screening of their “No Strings Attached” tour. I have long said I would pay dumb amounts of money for an *NSYNC reunion tour so I could finally live out the dream of seeing them in-person, and they seem to be teasing something of that nature.
Technically, the reason *NSYNC are back together is because they’re releasing a song, the group’s first in over 20 years, for the new Trolls movie. Ok, sure!! However, now that Justin Timberlake seems willing to concede that his solo career has stalled, he may be ready for a reunion tour. Time will tell if I’m right, but I think they’d be smart to get on board the nostalgia train while they can.
Music nostalgia has been on my mind lately because Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service, both bands fronted by Ben Gibbard, are on a tour celebrating the 20th anniversaries of their albums, Transatlanticism and Give Up. The tour wasn’t coming anywhere near me, so I decided not to travel for it. Now I am, of course, sad about that. These are both great albums, I love to be part of ~a moment~, AND Jenny Lewis is part of The Postal Service so she’s there wearing incredible Rodarte outfits and generally crushing it. Personally, my desire for nostalgia will not be satiated until there is a Rilo Kiley reunion tour, so let’s hope Jenny finds being on this current tour really inspiring!
This week I’ve been listening to Death Cab and the Postal Service (in an effort to console myself), Charli XCX and Leo Birenberg’s score from the movie Bottoms (go see!!!!), plus new music from Maren Morris, Mitski, Griff, Snail Mail, and more!
Thanks for reading and listening! If you enjoy Made You a Mix, please share with a friend!
