When the Coachella lineup dropped earlier this month, the very first thing I noticed was the inclusion of boygenius, the supergroup made up Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus. After putting out my favorite music of 2018, their self-titled EP, boygenius has been on hiatus. Bridgers, Baker, and Dacus have all put out excellent solo albums, appeared on each other’s albums as background vocalists, and toured extensively during the intervening years. The group’s inclusion on the Coachella lineup signaled a return.
This past Wednesday, we got the official announcement: boygenius’s full-length debut, the record, is out March 31st and three singles were out that day.
Bridgers, Baker, and Dacus are often lumped under the same genre- loosely indie-rock-queer-sad-girl music- but they each have a distinct sound. Of the three singles, “$20” is an electric guitar-driven Julien Baker track, “Emily I’m Sorry” is a melancholy, soft-sung Phoebe Bridgers track, and “True Blue” is a deep, dreamy Lucy Dacus track. As boygenius, their individual styles are connected, and enhanced, by each other’s harmonies and instrumentation. I am so stinking excited for this album. [Also, their Rolling Stone interview is great- I’m such a sucker for friendship!!!]
Can’t help myself, so all three boygenius tracks are on today’s round-up mix. Also the song by The 1975 I’ve found myself revisiting (a lot…) for some reason over the past few weeks, new tracks by Miley Cyrus, Margo Price, and more, plus some things I missed in 2022!
Happy new week! We’ve almost survived January!
