Hi, happy Monday! Last night, Beyoncé became the winningest person in the history of the Grammy Awards after winning her 29th, 30th, 31st, and 32nd awards, including Best Dance/Electronic Music Album for RENAISSANCE. The final, and biggest, award of the night, Album of the Year, ended up going to Harry Styles for Harry’s House, which is a totally fine album, but up against RENAISSANCE is the incorrect choice… sorry! Anyway, I’ll be listening to some Beyoncé today.
I’ve spent the last few weeks listening to an album I’m very late to: Petals for Armor, the 2020 solo album from Hayley Williams of Paramore. I completely missed this when it came out because, as recently discussed, I was mainly consuming really silly or light content in 2020. (I’m also not usually seeking out Paramore’s music, though I think Williams has one of the best voices in contemporary pop music.) I would not have had the bandwidth for this album, which is about Williams’s divorce and newfound relationship, when it first came out. But now! Three years late, I tumbled down a rabbit hole and find myself in deep with Petals for Armor.
Here’s how I ended up in this rabbit hole:
I read the Rolling Stone profile of boygenius in which the writer, Angie Martoccio, speaks with Hayley Williams about boygenius and her relationship to its members —> I watch a behind-the-scenes video from the Rolling Stone photoshoot that includes footage of Williams stopping by the set —> I see a comment on the video which says, “cool to remember Julien played on her Tiny Desk” —> I head to Hayley Williams’s Tiny Desk concert where, sure enough, Julien Baker is on guitar —> I watch and really enjoy the performance —> I’m playing a new-to-me album on repeat for the last two weeks
Phew! This is not the first, and certainly won’t be the last, time I discover music in a very internet-y way. My current favorite song from Petals for Armor is on today’s roundup mix as well as new or new-to-me music from Samia, Mightmare, Nickel Creek, and more!
I’m interested to know if you’ve ever found any good music down an internet rabbit hole? Let me know in the comments or by responding directly to this email!
Thanks for listening, reading, and subscribing! If you enjoy Made You a Mix, please share with a friend!
