Hi, happy Monday ahead of what is certainly a weird week. I voted last Friday, so I’ll be spending tomorrow worried and trying to stay busy (and hopefully avoiding any more transphobic, fear-mongering Republican ads). If you haven’t already, please plan to vote (for Kamala, to be perfectly clear) tomorrow.
just sent out an issue of full of “playlists for calm, hope, and anxiety relief” if you also need them!Listening: As we approach the end of the year, there will be a slowdown of new releases, but October was busy! I’ve listened to a lot in the last few weeks including new (or new-ish) albums from Soccer Mommy (Evergreen), Halsey (The Great Impersonator), Katie Gavin (What A Relief), Amythyst Kiah (Still + Bright), Fontaines D.C. (Romance), and Alex Winston (Bingo!) PLUS new tracks from Rebecca Black, Lilly Hiatt, Sharon Van Etten, Lady Gaga, Fickle Friends, Charlie Hickey, and more!
Watching: This past Saturday night, Chappell Roan proved she really is That Girl when she performed on SNL. I have (for better or worse!) been a devoted SNL fan for years, so I’ve watched a lot of musical guests take the stage. This is a notoriously tough venue to play - there are often sound issues, you’re playing to a crowd that maybe doesn’t know or care about you, there’s pressure to do something memorable - and Chappell really made this work. Visually, sonically this performance of “Pink Pony Club,” her 2020 sleeper hit, rocked.
Reading: The Story of ‘Cardinals at the Window,’ the All-Star Benefit Album That Raised $340,000 for Western North Carolina- a quick read about how the music community rallied to support Western North Carolina following Hurricane Helene. The album is still available on Bandcamp with 100% of proceeds going to Helene relief and recovery in Western NC.
