Happy Monday! Coming at you with today’s mix a little later than normal because I was out all weekend at High Water Fest, my favorite musical festival and the first since 2019!
Above: An awful photo of Jack White (!!!!!) from High Water. At Jack’s non-festival shows, he makes everyone lock up their phones, so it felt sacrilegious to take more than a couple bad photos.
This week’s mix includes songs I added to my personal playlist over the last few weeks plus some new and old faves from this weekend’s shows. A reminder: I am clearly not a music critic, but I am a gossip who loves trivia, so just a note of the kind of commentary you get along with these mixes!
Lola, Maude Latour- Maude Latour is a senior at Columbia who toured on her recent spring break. Can’t relate- my friend group was passive-aggressively beefing at someone’s beach house during senior spring break. Think hers wins!
Sidelines, Phoebe Bridgers- This song is featured in the trailer for the adaptation of Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney- please see this tweet for a wild graphic tracking all the connections between Phoebe Bridgers, Sally Rooney, Taylor Swift, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Don’t Tell Anyone, Semler- I’m going to have to do a “music I found from TikTok” mix at some point because whether we like it or not, TikTok is playing a huge role in the music industry right now. All that to say, I discovered Semler on TikTok and like this song.
About Damn Time, Lizzo- I thought Lizzo was really fun as the double duty host-musical guest on a recent episode of SNL. She introduced herself for the performance of “About Damn Time,” making her only the second musical guest to ever do so.
downBAD, Stop Light Observations- SLO is a Charleston-area band that puts out retro-feeling stuff; this is their latest.
For the First Time, Best Coast- Bethany Cosentino, lead singer of Best Coast, is a huge Rilo Kiley fan and I’ve known that for a long time, but for some reason I had never listened to Best Coast until about a month ago. Shocker not, a group heavily influenced by my favorite band is good!
Candidate, Jade Bird- Jade put on a great set in a full pants suit on a really sunny afternoon at High Water. I’ve listened to her older stuff, but had completely missed her new album- really liked this one.
Spring (Among the Living), My Morning Jacket- I’m not a huge MMJ fan (outside of “One Big Holiday” being used during a crucial moment in the 2006 ~Film~, Stick It, which sadly I cannot find on Youtube), but their set at High Water was awesome. Lead singer/guitarist Jim James has perfect front man/cult leader vibes, which I’m very much here for.
Last Night, Jeremie Albino- My favorite find of this past weekend was Jeremie Albino. It’s tough to be the first set of a day-long festival, but he really got the crowd on his side.
Ball and a Biscuit, The White Stripes- Jack White is a great performer for a lot of reasons, but one is that he is willing to play the hits and fan favorites in addition to his new stuff (some artists could take a note… looking at you, Bob Dylan…!). He played a few White Stripes songs during his set last night, including “Ball and Biscuit,” which he has only played a couple times on this tour.
