Every so often a pop culture anniversary shakes me and reminds me how quickly time flies. The latest was this TikTok by musician Kate Nash:

I have a vague memory of discovering this song, “Foundations,” and Kate Nash after one of the tracks off her album, Made of Bricks, was iTunes’ “free song of the week.” That was fifteen years ago. This song is now as old as I was when I first heard it.
I think 15-year-old-me would be shocked by what we’ve been up to since we first heard “Foundations.” No, we didn’t become an orthodontist (a childhood dream I had because I knew my orthodontist was making bank [his office had free arcade games!] and he seemed to be doing the least work there [shoutout to all the techs who handled my braces!]), but we ARE still listening to a lot of music AND we’ve seen Jenny Lewis in concert several times!
In many ways I feel like I was a completely different person 15 years ago, but in my heart of hearts I know that I am still the same girl, scouring the internet for new songs and making my friends listen to them. Thanks for letting me share.
I’m kicking off this week’s mix with “Foundations,” which I’ve listened to a lot lately, as well as Kate Nash’s latest single, “Imperfect.”
[Adding this because I don’t know when else I will get the chance: Kate Nash recorded an updated version of The Babysitter’s Club theme song, “Say Hello to Your Friends,” for the recent Netflix series. If you have any nostalgic connection to The Babysitter’s Club, I think you will love this show. It is fun and sweet and made me cry every single episode.]
