Happy Monday! Firstly, I’d like to thank everyone who reached out to me about one of the bigger pieces of pop culture news this past week: Taylor Swift and Matty Healy’s rumored relationship. It’s nice to be thought of, especially since I do have a lot of opinions on the matter.
I’ll keep it brief: I am disappointed, but not that surprised, by this relationship news. Matty Healy, the lead singer/primary songwriter of The 1975, is a shitty dude who fancies himself a performance artist and provocateur. Taylor is no saint (also something about this just feels like a stunt-y, PR move), but aligning yourself with a controversial guy is a weird move no matter the reason.
So, what else has been going on?
Beyoncé kicked off her Renaissance World Tour in Stockholm, Sweden.
Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels won a Pulitzer Prize in Music for Omar, an opera about enslaved people brought to North America from Muslim countries that premiered at the Spoleto Festival in 2022.
Loreen, a Swedish pop singer, won Eurovision on Saturday.
I went to a Pitbull concert last week and it was one of the silliest shows I’ve ever experienced. He gave a lot of motivational speeches between songs including one about using social media, but not letting it use you! He also closed the show by leading the crowd in a chant of the riff from “Seven Nation Army.” Loved it, would go again.
New music from Janelle Monae, Mikaela Davis, Arlo Park, Venus & the Flytraps, and more- all of which are on today’s roundup mix:
