Swifties rejoice! This past Friday, the world was #blessed by Taylor Swift’s latest re-recorded track!
Following the sale of her masters to someone other than herself, Taylor has taken on the massive task of re-recording her first 6 albums so that she can 1) own her own fucking songs 2) devalue the versions owned by someone else. She dropped Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version) in 2021, and we have been waiting [im]patiently for more. Last Friday, she released the latest track from the re-record project, one of my favorite Taylor b-sides, “This Love (Taylor’s Version)” from her 2014 album, 1989.
Perhaps not shockingly, I’m deep in the world of Swiftie TikTok where theories abound. The latest include the theory that she has in fact been able to purchase the masters. Perhaps! More convincing to me is the theory that this Friday, May 13th, she will be releasing a double re-record and dropping both 1989 (Taylor’s Version) AND Speak Now (Taylor’s Version). This would be huge. STAY TUNED!
(Can you believe we made it this many newsletters before I rambled about Taylor? Me either! More to come!)
Here’s the full Monday Mix:
This Love, Taylor Swift- The last thing I will say is that this song features one of my favorite Taylor deliveries: “this love is A-live, back from the dead.”
Kind of Girl, MUNA- It’s giving The Chicks with a twist! Please do yourself a favor and watch the one-shot music video.
F*****g Up What Matters, Tegan and Sara- I’ve been a Tegan and Sara fan for years (shoutout all-girls summer camp for that!) and have enjoyed them in every iteration - angsty guitar music, Jack Antanoff-produced pop music, and quirky aughts indie. This song, the first single off their upcoming 10th album, is really different. Which is cool! It’s cool that a band that’s been making music for over 20 years can still find new sounds.
Eugene, Arlo Parks- Wanna vibe out? Arlo Parks!!! This song, and album generally, make me want to drink a beer on the beach.
Cate’s Brother, Maisie Peters- Maisie is another TikTok find (sorry not sorry). She’s been teasing the song for a while and it’s a fun bop about crushing on your friend’s brother.
Heart Shape, Margaret Glaspy- I saw Margaret open for Neko Case a few years ago and occasionally check in on what she’s up to. This is her latest!
Masterclass, Gatlin- You know I can’t resist a fun riff and a lil’ pop punk moment.
Western Wind, Carly Rae Jepsen- New music from one of pop’s most underrated girlies!
Thank you for reading! If Taylor does drop 2 re-recorded albums this week, you can expect an Emergency Mix in your inbox!
