The recent shooting at a nightclub in Colorado Springs is on my mind. It serves as an unnecessary reminder that the LGBTQ+ community is not safe. Homophobic comments passed off under the guise of “religious beliefs” by “celebrities” like Candace Cameron Bure and the Republican Party’s ongoing attempts to demonize queer peoples’ mere existence are deadly. No amount of “thoughts and prayers” will fix this, especially from the people whose words and actions encourage it. It’s hard to feel safe and it’s hard to feel hopeful. This is a link to an official donation page for the victims and their families. How many more of these will I donate to before something changes?
I wrote this week’s newsletter before the events of Saturday night, so I apologize for the abrupt shift in tone.
What a weird week to be a Taylor Swift fan. As you may have heard, or personally experienced, Ticketmaster buckled last week under the incredible demand for tickets to Taylor Swift’s upcoming tour. Before the tour could even go on sale to the public, 2.4 million people bought tickets in the presale, effectively selling out the entire tour. The sale was poorly handled by Ticketmaster, who severely misjudged how many fans would access the presale which led to major issues with the website and shut out any fans without presale access, and to a lesser extent Taylor’s team, who were not transparent about ticket costs/VIP package markups and did not do enough to ensure ticket holders from her cancelled 2020 shows got tickets.
There’s little else I can add here that has not already been said (see Hunter Harris’s latest newsletter for a great-as-ever take on this situation). Break up Ticketmaster! Remember that pop stars are businesses and sometimes that comes at the expense of the fan experience!
What else went on this past week? Twitter is dying. Beyoncé has now tied her husband as the most nominated artist in Grammy history. Joan Didion’s estate sale was wild. Elizabeth Holmes was sentenced to 11 years in prison for fraud. In a moment of weakness I watched the new Lindsay Lohan Christmas movie on Netflix and enjoyed it. All around, a wacky week!
