The 2024 Grammy nominations were announced last week. The Grammys are among the least objective ways to recognize musicians for their work - Lana Del Rey revealed she just learned artists had to personally submit their work to be considered for the awards - but they still hold some cultural weight.
I am not great at predictions, but I love to make them, so here are some thoughts about this year’s nominees in the Big Four Categories:
Record of the Year
“Kill Bill,” SZA [Should win, I think will win.]
“Not Strong Enough,” Boygenius [This is my favorite song of the year, so would love to see this win, but do not expect it to.]
“Worship,” Jon Batiste
“Flowers,” Miley Cyrus
“What Was I Made For?” from “Barbie,” Billie Eilish
“On My Mama,” Victoria Monét
“Vampire,” Olivia Rodrigo
“Anti-Hero,” Taylor Swift
Album of the Year
SOS, SZA [Should win, I think will win.]
World Music Radio, Jon Batiste [Jon Batiste has won this award before and is a Recording Academy favorite, so it would not totally surprise me if this won. Also, he’s the only man nominated in this category so really wouldn’t be surprised if he somehow won.]
The Record, Boygenius
Endless Summer Vacation, Miley Cyrus
Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, Lana Del Rey
The Age of Pleasure, Janelle Monáe
Guts, Olivia Rodrigo
Midnights, Taylor Swift
Song of the Year
“Anti-Hero” — Jack Antonoff & Taylor Swift, songwriters (Taylor Swift) [Midnights is my least favorite Taylor Swift album, but I do think this is one of her best songs in recent years. Should win and I think will win.]
“What Was I Made For?” (From “Barbie the Album”) — Billie Eilish O’Connell & Finneas O’Connell, songwriters (Billie Eilish) [The Recording Academy LOVES Billie Eilish, so I could see a world where this won even though it really shouldn’t…]
“A&W” — Jack Antonoff, Lana Del Rey & Sam Dew, songwriters (Lana Del Rey) [It would be fun for this to win this so we could have a Lana acceptance speech moment.]
“Butterfly” — Jon Batiste & Dan Wilson, songwriters (Jon Batiste)
“Dance the Night” (From “Barbie the Album”) — Caroline Ailin, Dua Lipa, Mark Ronson & Andrew Wyatt, songwriters (Dua Lipa)
“Flowers” — Miley Cyrus, Gregory Aldae Hein & Michael Pollack, songwriters (Miley Cyrus)
“Kill Bill” — Rob Bisel, Carter Lang & Solána Rowe, songwriters (SZA)
“Vampire” — Daniel Nigro & Olivia Rodrigo, songwriters (Oliva Rodrigo)
Best New Artist
Ice Spice [I think will win!]
Noah Kahan [would also like this win]
Victoria Monét [or this win]
The War and Treaty [or this win!]
Gracie Abrams
Fred Again
Jelly Roll
Coco Jones
Come back in February to see how few of these I got right!
This week’s roundup mix includes some Grammys inspired picks, new music from Dua Lipa (an absolute bop even if I think using Houdini’s name as a metaphor for disappearing is boring), a track from Rubblebucket (they are the best live band and I saw them again last week), and more! Would love to know what you’re listening to!
Thanks for being here, for reading, and for listening! If you enjoy Made You a Mix, please share with a friend!
