Bethany Cosentino’s new album, Natural Disaster, came out this past Friday. She had been promising something inspired by the 90s sounds of Lilith Fair, and I think she delivered. I am loving this album: it is perfect summery, sit-on-the-porch-with-a-drink music. And I think that is one of the best genres!
Here are some of my other favorite albums of this genre:
Joy’all AND The Voyager by Jenny Lewis: Joy’all is a little more country while The Voyager is a little more rock-n-roll, so go for whatever you’re feeling.
Blue, Joni Mitchell: A camp counselor used to sing us “Carey,” so Blue always feels like sitting around a campfire on a starry night.
Trinity Lane, Lilly Hiatt: One of my all time favorite albums, perfect for summer listening.
After Laughter, Paramore: This is actually more of a sounds happy/is sad album, BUT if we’re just going for summery sonic vibes, this is it.
The Age of Pleasure, Janelle Monáe: Another new entry to the summery albums canon (it’s been a good year for them)!
Golden Hour, Kacey Musgraves: Best listened to during (you guessed it) golden hour.
RENAISSANCE, Beyoncé: For your summer dance party!
Pet Sounds, The Beach Boys: Honestly, just about any Beach Boys album would work here, but we’ll go with The Big One.
Texas Sun, Khruangbin and Leon Bridges: A quick EP!
Any of these albums, played in full, make for a great summery soundtrack. But this is Made You a Mix! So this week, I’m sharing a mix from my personal archive, “Drinks on The Porch.” I’ve been adding to this for the last few years, and it’s my go-to when I have friends over, am at the beach, or just need something I know is upbeat. Featuring lots of songs from the above albums plus many, many more!
Have a favorite summery album? Would love to know what it is! Let me know in the comments or by responding directly to this email.
Thanks for being here! If you enjoy Made You a Mix, please share with a friend!
