Hi, happy Monday! It’s the first Monday in May which means tonight is the Met Gala, the annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. As both a museum professional and a pop culture lover, I’m a sucker for the Met Gala. This year’s Gala celebrates the opening of the new exhibit, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” with the official dress code being, “tailored for you.” Excited to see how the red carpet plays out! [This is an interesting read on this year’s Met Gala in the current political climate. Let this whole event serve as a reminder that museums, federal arts and humanities organizations, and cultural institutions across the country are currently under attack by the Trump administration- please support your local cultural community with a visit or a donation!]
Tonight is also an especially happy Monday because Rilo Kiley plays the first show of their reunion tour, and their first show since 2008, tonight! I am seeing them next week [AHHH] at Red Rocks [AHHH!!!], so I am trying to remain in the dark about too many show details. In the meantime, I loved this New York Times profile of the band. Nostalgia is very powerful!
In major pop news- Lorde is back with a new song, “What Was That,” and a confirmed upcoming album! Notably absent from the writing and production credits is longtime collaborator, Jack Antonoff. HOORAY! To be clear, I don’t hate Jack Antonoff, I just want the pop girls to try working with someone else and Lorde is! Jack was heavily involved in the making of Lorde’s last two albums (Melodrama and Solar Power) and plays a major role in the Lorde Lore. So while Jack’s not in the credits, he’s there in spirit because of course there’s speculation that the new song may be about him. Regardless, I like the song and am excited for the album (even if I can’t stand to look at the album cover - apparently I’m not a fan of X-rays).
I’m also really liking new albums from Samia, Jensen McRae, Blondshell, and Esther Rose plus new tracks from The Greeting Committee, Rico Nasty, ELIO, Aminé, and more!
