Happy Wednesday- I didn’t open my computer over the long weekend, so better late than never I guess!
My grad school trivia team (shout out Quiztina Aguilera) was [still is] really good at a “Name That Song” trivia round. One of the more challenging ones we ever played featured covers from the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge. We had to determine not just the song being covered, but which band/artists was doing the covering. (I copied this round for the weekly trivia my extended family played over Zoom in 2020, and it was not received well! This is a hard round!)
Having spent my entire [short-lived] music career covering Rilo Kiley, Regina Spektor, and Taylor Swift songs at a dive-y pizza restaurant on Sunday nights, I love covers. I love that moment at a bar with live music when the crowd rallies around a cover. I love how much we love when one famous artist covers another (ie. the success of the aforementioned BBC Live Lounge covers as well as the Spotify Single series). I love when you’re listening to an album and suddenly realize they’ve hidden a cover in there. I love when a cover elevates an already good song or changes it entirely.
Today’s mix features some of my favorite covers including MUNA covering Normani, Shovels & Rope with Sharon Van Etten covering The Beach Boys, Amythyst Kiah covering Tori Amos, Tori Amos covering Nirvana, and more!
Missing any of your favorite covers? Let me know in the comments or by replying directly to this email!

P.S. As you know, I cannot NOT think about Taylor Swift and have spent a lot of the past week mulling over the latest: a collaboration with Ice Spice. The collab is of note because Taylor is currently linked to Shitty Guy Matty Healy who earlier this very year made racist comments about Ice Spice. I have thoughts which you can read in full here.
