Happy Monday! Sorry to have missed last week, but Made You a Mix is a labor of love and some weeks it just doesn’t happen! [If you do want Made You a Mix every single Monday, you can pledge your support and let me know!]
Obviously, I saw Barbie over the weekend- it was great. Not since the release of the first Twilight movie in 2008 have I been so excited to go to a movie.
I loved playing with Barbies as a kid, and think of Barbie as a generally positive force. Sure, she represents unrealistic beauty standards, but there was plenty of other shit fucking up my body image in the late 1990s and early 2000s; Barbie was the least of my worries. To me, Barbie was an outlet for creativity and storytelling. My sister and I channeled lots of chaotic energy into our Barbies: we loved to enact hours and hours of soap opera-level plots with our dolls. Our most interesting [concerning?] storyline involved a cult whose members would regularly try to recruit [abduct?] the mom of our Barbie family. Normal stuff!
Anyway! The PR rollout for this movie has been incredible: a staggering amount of brand and product collaborations; cryptic trailers; Margot Robbie’s Barbie-inspired red carpet looks; and an absolutely stacked soundtrack which came out this past Friday. The soundtrack is, as I feared, mainly full of throwaways. I do like Charli XCX’s contribution even if it is only her fifth best song about driving fast and being hot [Number 1, Number 2, Number 3, Number 4]. I wanted more!
So here I am, adding my two cents to the onslaught of Barbie content with a mix inspired by this movie, the spirit of Barbie, etc. etc. To me, that means a lot of high-energy pop and girl power vibes. The result is (I think!) a really fun mix perfect for blasting in your convertible with the top down!
