Living in the south, fall is more of a state of mind than an actual season. We finally leave behind the brutally hot month of August, it’s just regular hot for a bit, and then, at some point in October, you need a jacket. None of this stops me from wanting to embrace fall. If anything, it means I need to lean into it more.1
I am always chasing the energy of one very specific fall day from my childhood: roughly 2002; probably October, but maybe November; a Saturday; at my home in suburban Detroit. It was so nice outside: a cloudless, sunny, cool day. My sister, our immediate neighbor, and our across-the-street neighbor played outside in the morning and then had lunch (hot dogs, to be exact) in the bed of our neighbor’s dad’s truck. For whatever reason, 20 years later, this is what I consider the Ideal Fall Day.
In an effort to recreate this feeling (sunny, crisp, relaxed, colorful, a little nostalgic), I’m manifesting fall with this week’s mix featuring songs that give me that feeling. I suggest listening while baking this pumpkin bread to get the best results.

Can I be honest? Fall isn’t even my favorite season, spring is. But fall has the better publicist, so I can’t resist.
