Happy Monday, post-Super Bowl Sunday! This was the first time in my entire life that I truly cared about the NFL because it was the first time in my entire life that my hometown team (Go Lions!) did as well as they did. Sorry to be a fair weather fan, but it is way more fun when your team is winning! Anyway, congrats to Usher for a halftime show of nonstop hits and for being able to perform while roller skating. Congrats also to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce for being the first couple to ever win Album of the Year and a Super Bowl within a week of each other.
Lastly, congrats to Beyoncé who announced a new album and released two singles, “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM” and “16 CARRIAGES,” during the Super Bowl. Act II, out March 29th, is the follow up to Renaissance and it sounds like it will be a country album. This is not Beyoncé’s first brush with country music- “Daddy Lessons” off Lemonade is a country track and you may recall that certain [racist] country fans lost their minds when she performed it with The Chicks at the 2016 CMAs.
Beyoncé’s is the latest in a string of high profile new music announcements. Looking ahead, we know this year also includes confirmed albums from Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande as well as expected albums from Dua Lipa, Lorde, and Lana Del Rey. And these are only the biggest names!1
Last Thursday, Kacey Musgraves and Maggie Rogers both released the title tracks off their upcoming albums. Kacey and Maggie are artists I really love but whose most recent albums, star-crossed and Surrender respectively, did not do it for me. I do, however, like these lead singles, “Deeper Well” from Kacey and “Don’t Forget Me” from Maggie, and hope this holds true for the albums! Both tracks are included on this week’s mix.
Today’s mix also includes new music from Madi Diaz, Brittany Howard, girl in red, Chelsea Wolfe, and more! Lots to look forward to!
Thanks for being here, for reading, and for listening! If you enjoy Made You a Mix, please share with a friend!
Of personal interest, Faye Webster, Chastity Belt, Waxahatchee, girl in red, Jade Bird, Sarah Shook & The Disarmers, and FLETCHER have all confirmed new albums while Kehlani, Maren Morris, and Charli XCX have all teased new music in 2024. Sorry not sorry there’s not a single man on my radar!
