Happy Monday! This week’s newsletter feels particularly self-indulgent, so thanks for being here, for reading, and for listening.
In my earliest music-listening days, I owned several albums with the intention of listening to a single song. Great example: I had The Corrs’ 2000 album, In Blue, entirely because of the song “Breathless,” and never made it past track 5 on the CD. (Looking at the track list now, I don’t even recognize the other titles?! There are 11 more songs on this album?!) By middle school, I had an iTunes account and an iPod, so I never had to buy an entire album just to enjoy the singles again! Throughout high school and in to college, I rarely put in the time to listen to an entire album front-to-back.1 In the long run, these listening practices created some major gaps in my music knowledge.
One of my personal music resolutions for this year has been to fill in the gaps and listen to albums I’ve never listened to in full/never listened to at all. Over the past few weeks, that’s included:
Warren Zevon, Warren Zevon
Rid of Me and To Bring You My Love, PJ Harvey
The Score, The Fugees
Prince, Purple Rain, and 3121, Prince
I’ve also been enjoying new releases including:
the record, boygenius
CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST: The Estate Sale, Tyler, The Creator
Fishbowl, Kate Davis
Celebrants, Nickel Creek
While writing this newsletter, I resolved to listen to the entirety of In Blue by The Corrs. I’m not going to lie, I was not missing much by sticking to the first few songs on this CD…
This week’s mix is a little bit of everything I’ve had on rotation lately including some favorite tracks from the albums mentioned above plus new singles [new Jenny Lewis, yay yay yay!] and new-to-me one-off tracks.
Have a favorite album that I need to hear? I’d love some suggestions! Let me know in the comments or reply directly to this email!
