This past Friday, Ariana Grande released her new album, eternal sunshine. It is the first of the big Pop Girl releases of the year and it’s pretty good.

I have a real soft spot for Ariana in spite of the fact that she is a lighting rod for drama and tabloid headlines, sometimes at the expense of eclipsing her talent. My favorite Ariana album, Sweetener, was overshadowed by her tumultuous personal life at the time. eternal sunshine seems at risk of being overshadowed by the news of her recent divorce and new relationship with one of her Wicked movie co-stars.

However, I think this is a solid pop album (Max Martin is back! He brought a crying-in-the-club moment very reminiscent of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own”!) and her voice has never sounded better (working on Wicked has apparently only made her stronger), so it’s worth listening to eternal sunshine without focusing on the gossip. Hope this is a good omen for all the big pop releases to come this year!
