Last week, Bethany Cosentino, lead singer of the band Best Coast, announced she is releasing a solo album this summer and that Best Coast is now on an “indefinite hiatus.”1
“Being on hiatus” seems to be the easiest way for bands to take a break, or to slowly creep towards a break up, without causing too much of a fuss. With a hiatus, there’s the implication, though it’s maybe not always the truth, that there’s no bad blood between the members of the band, but that it’s time for a change.
Today’s mix is made up songs from bands who’ve taken the hiatus route. Some bands have come back from their hiatus to release music or tour (including No Doubt, Ben Folds Five, Sleater-Kinney, and Weezer) [sometimes to return to a hiatus] while others have disbanded for good (including Rilo Kiley and The White Stripes).
Time will tell if this is the end for Best Coast or if they’ll return from this hiatus. As someone who lived through her favorite band’s hiatus becoming a permanent split, all I can do is leave you with a lovely Dawes lines: “may all your favorite bands stay together.”
