This week marks one year of Made You a Mix! I started this newsletter on a whim following a writing workshop I took last March. I thought it would be a good way to hold myself accountable for writing about something, even if it was short, every week as well as to process my many (many) thoughts on music and pop culture. I’ve loved sharing my music tastes since I learned how to burn CDs in the early aughts, and this felt like the closest thing to that.
I never planned to send Made You a Mix to anyone beyond the friends and family who already received this kind of stuff from me. However, over the last year, this audience has grown way beyond friends and family.1 I’m very grateful for that, so thank you! Thanks for being here, for subscribing, for listening, for commenting, for DMing me, for simply opening the email every week! Working on Made You a Mix has been a highlight of the past year.
Since last March, I’ve made over 50 mixes. Some personal favorites include:
In the true spirit of Made You a Mix, this week’s mix is a throwback to my roots: it is a reproduction of an actual mix CD I made in 2007 for my best friend, Elizabeth. Amazingly, she still has this CD in her car. This thing is a true 2007 time capsule, for better or worse. Hopefully you can at least laugh at the throwbacks (including a song from the musical episode of Scrubs which is probably on here because I’d made Elizabeth watch that episode). Also, I was not kidding when I said every mix I made in my teen years included at least one, if not many, Rilo Kiley songs. Enjoy!
